Joy was born August 9, 1940 in Heard County to the late Willie Joe Walston and Lera Louise Shelnutt Walston. She was a member of Centralhatchee First Baptist Church.

From an early age she had a love for rocks. Common everyday rocks were just as precious to her as any gemstone. For many years she traveled with her husband, Roger, to Franklin, NC to visit the gemstone mines. Even after Roger’s death, Joy went to Franklin, NC with the family every time she was able. One of her prized possessions was a purple amethyst necklace made from one of the stones mined from that area. Purple was Joy’s favorite color, and she wore the color almost daily, which matched the necklace perfectly.

She was a very talented artist. She loved to paint and did so on many different media, including rocks, snow sleds, slate, wooden planks, and rocking horses. She was known for displaying her craft at many of the local art shows, especially the Powers Crossroads Festival during Labor Day Weekend. She also operated a mercantile store from 1963 – 1973.

She enjoyed collecting and selling antiques. She traveled extensively looking for interesting things, going as far as Germany and France on several occasions. She accumulated an extensive collection of different items. She rarely purchased only one of anything. Even today one can visit her house and see the hundreds of items she gathered through the years.

One of her other passions was educating the young children of Centralhatchee. She worked as a teacher’s aide for several years, then earned a bachelor’s, master’s, and specialist’s degree from the University of West Georgia. She taught 4’th grade at Centralhatchee Elementary School, where she was loved by her students and fellow teachers. She was an active member of the Georgia Association of Educators and the National Education Association.

The year 1999 was an eventful one for Joy. Roger passed away in January, and her only grandchild, Haley, was born in August. Joy doted on Haley because she knew what a blessing she was to her and the family. Friday night each week was Joy and Haley’s special night. They spent many wonderful times together as the years slipped away.

Survivors include: two sons: Mart Hyatt (Stephanie) and Rembert Roger “Bert” Hyatt (Susan); one granddaughter, Haley Joy Hyatt; one sister, Jennie Walston all of Franklin; a special friend, Josephine Wilkes; her dog, Princess; and a number of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Roger R. Hyatt; a granddaughter, Courtney Kemmerlin; and a sister, Judy Jones McCullough.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Centralhatchee First Baptist Church Cemetery Fund (In Care of Tonnie Adams: 109 Loftin Ln Franklin, GA 30217)
